Week in Jun 04, 2023

The rainy days have continued for almost two weeks, and this summer's rainy season feels like it has arrived earlier than in previous years. Last weekend, the Premier League matches for this season have also concluded. Manchester City secured the Premier League championship two rounds early, and the final match no longer held any suspense.

Looking back at some of the things done this week:

Tools#

Recently, I have been considering how to implement a Bot that can be trained on custom data, using the OpenAI API, LangchainJS, and vector databases. Databerry is a no-code platform that supports using custom data to create a ChatGPT Agent, and the overall user experience is quite good. However, the limitations of the free version are too many, and I haven't had the chance to explore it deeply; my quota is almost used up.

Last week, I also participated in a hackathon competition and finally did a "full-stack" development—frontend + smart contracts + PPT + video, almost all completed by myself. The PPT part was assisted by gamma, which saved me a lot of time. I just needed to throw the README from the project into gamma as an outline, and it helped me complete the overall framework of the PPT. There are also many great styles to choose from, and modifying the layout is very convenient.

yt-fts is a command-line tool that allows full-text search of subtitles in YouTube channels. The principle is to use yt-dlp to first download all the subtitles of the videos in the channel and then store them in an sqlite database for full-text retrieval. The latest version also supports semantic search using OpenAI embeddings.

Podcasts listened to#

This episode features You Yuxi as a guest. I really didn't expect You's singing to be so beautiful 😂. After listening to this episode, I specifically went to listen to Fang Datong's "Spring Breeze Blows" a few times. This episode did not discuss specific technologies but shared experiences of living in Singapore and how to make decisions, etc. A particularly memorable conversation was when discussing the reasons for Vue's success; he said, "There may be many people whose technical skills are comparable to or exceed his, but his difference is that he understands user needs better." Also, timing; at that time, frontend engineering was just beginning.

Books read#

  • "The Right Bank of the Erguna River" — Chi Zijian

This book depicts the century-long vicissitudes and current living conditions of the Evenki people. On the land where the Evenki people have lived for generations, there are reindeer, trees, rivers, the moon, and the gentle breeze that accompany them day and night. The author's writing is very beautiful; I remember encountering her works often in text comprehension during high school.

So far, I have only finished the first chapter; I will share more feelings in the upcoming articles.
